How does therapy work?

What to expect for the consultation:

This is an opportunity for you to interview me! Share some of your current challenges, what brings you to therapy, and how you’re hoping I will be able to help. I encourage you to ask any questions you might have and share any concerns about beginning a therapeutic relationship. At the end of our call, if you feel that I’m a good fit for your needs, we will book an intake session and I will send you a link to clinic policies and consent forms.

What to expect at the first session:

For the first few minutes, we’ll cover informed consent, how my practice works, and make sure all your questions are answered—no fine print surprises. The rest of the session is about actually getting to know you: your history, what’s going on in your life now, and what you want to change, where you want to start and establish a treatment goals tailored specifically to you.

Follow up sessions:

This is where the work begins. We will work together to uncover where you would like to start, and from there, we’ll build a clear, individualized treatment plan so therapy doesn’t turn into the same “problem of the week” on repeat. And because life loves to throw curveballs, that plan is flexible—we’ll adjust it as you grow and things shift. Depending on what you prefer, I can take on a more structured approach, let you do most of the talking, or a balance of each. Usually, after the first couple of sessions my clients feel more comfortable and get into a groove that works for them.

What's your story for becoming a therapist?

I became a therapist because therapy worked. It worked for me, and it worked for people I love. I have seen what becomes possible when someone feels truly heard, not analyzed or fixed, just understood. I believe every person’s story deserves a safe place to be shared and taken seriously.

My own story began with trauma. I nearly died at birth, unable to feel the connection with my parents as I was alone in the NICU. This early experience shaped my struggles with attachment throughout my life. When I was three years old, my mother was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, reawakening the fear that I might lose her again. As I grew older, I felt increasing pressure to meet expectations of “being a man”—to stay strong, hold everything together, and take care of others—which made healing from something I never chose even more difficult. I know what it is like to carry pain you did not ask for and still be told to push through it.

What I learned through my own work is simple and honest. The right therapist makes all the difference. You do not just need someone who is only trained. You need someone who is trained and has done their own healing. The kind of therapist that is, confident with your care, grounded, present, and able to walk beside you without judgment.

At the heart of my work is a deep belief in the power of relationships. Within families, marriages, close partnerships, and the relationship we have with ourselves; our ability to connect shapes how safe and whole we feel. I am deeply committed to helping clients build relationships that are healthy, meaningful, and lasting. Supporting others in creating the connection they long for is not just my profession. It is my life’s work.

What is your education and unique passions?

I earned my graduate degree in Social Work from Syracuse University, where I focused on working with veterans with PTSD and developed a deep respect for the balance between evidence based practice, genuine human connection and deep rooted pain. That balance still guides how I show up in the therapy room today.

During that time, I also discovered an unexpected passion for elite competitive and service dog training. What started as a personal curiosity about behavior, trust, and communication grew into hands on work with both people and their dogs. Over the years, I have trained and worked with working line German Shepherds across the United States supporting veterans, including my own personal protection dog, Jax, whom I trained myself (yes he is the big black GSD that you see on my website!)

That experience sharpened my understanding of connection, leadership, and emotional regulation to a deeper level. These are the same principles at the core of effective therapy. Whether I am helping someone build trust with their dog or rebuild trust within themselves, the work comes back to the same values. Patience. Presence. Partnership.

What is the cost of therapy services?

I currently do not take insurance at this time. Services are out of pocket with cost start at $175 per 50 minute session. Clients often experience significant symptom relief in just 1-2 sessions. Any sessions after hours/emergency sessions cost $200. I accept credit card, HSA, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal and cash. Payment is due at the time of services. Out-of-network benefits available where cost is typically reimbursed around 60-80%.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require 24 hours notice if you cannot attend session. If you do not provide notice you will be charged for your scheduled time.

Will anybody know I am in therapy?

Only if you choose to tell them. I will never break confidentiality unless you specifically sign a Release of Information saying I can talk to people in your life. This is generally used for continuity of care (ie: if you are working individually with me but would like me to talk to the therapist you are seeing for couples sessions).

Benefits of self pay?

Paying privately means that you have greater control over your medical information.

No Insurance oversight :

Private pay avoids potential complications or restrictions that may arise when insurance companies dictate the number or type of sessions allowed.

Flexibility in provider choice:

You have the freedom to choose any therapist, regardless of whether they are in-network or out-of-network, broadening your options. This may be helpful if you are looking for more specialized care.

Out-of-Network Benefits:

If you would like to utilize your out-of-network benefits, you may request a superbill to submit to your insurance. I cannot guarantee that these superbills will be reimbursed. You can check with your insurance company what your out-of-network benefits are and your eligibility to be reimbursed for services.

How often should I attend therapy sessions with Steven Ayers Therapy?

Many of my clients begin to experience relief after just 1-2 50 minute sessions, a testament to the effectiveness of our therapy. On average, my clients typically require 8-12 hours of weekly therapy to become symptom-free and ready for graduation. The precise duration varies based on factors such as the severity of symptoms, client history, and current medications, as well as the frequency of session attendance and engagement in treatment.
